My parents (Carmel) are having problems with a Great Horned Owl swooping down and trying to take their small dogs and now the neighbors dog.

The owl has swooped at but not touched their dogs, but tonight was different.

Tonight "it" hit the fan, my mother called in her dachshund and at that same time heard a strange commotion in the neighbors yard. Then later the neighbor told her that at the moment my mother called in her dog, the owl swooped down to take her (neighbors) dog and it was in kill mode but was startled by my mothers voice and aborted. My mother is terrified.

How do you deal with a bird this size? HC Animal control's website says they deal with all wildlife that threatens HUMANS.

Has anyone successfully driven off an owl from its territory?

Need to contact the DNR as owls, being raptors, are federally protected. Or the county conservation officer/s for advice.

Do anything to harm the owl and your folks could find themselves in deep crap. They're protected. Like singlestacksig said, keep the animals inside after dark and at dawn and dusk. Also wouldn't hurt for them to escort the animals when they're out, as an added precaution. There's not much to do except wait for it to move to better hunting grounds, which could take a long while.

Blanks . Firecrakers , Something that will make a loud noise to spook it off ?

Just Guessing on this but I wouldn't think it would be against the law ?

I'm sure the local DNR would let you know what to do .

All of those methods are illegal and could result in fines or jail time, (it is Carmel, after all). You can't harm or harass raptors in any way.

I'd personally drop a line to the USFWS as well and see what your options are. I know how to deal with raptors when they are taking livestock, (out west mostly) but your case is different.

    Good luck :ingo:

Not beating up on you but I've done quite a bit of research and learned a lot of what to do and what not to do as far as raptors. Just don't want any one getting in trouble over this.

Dogs have to "go", and it has swooped the dogs on their leash while walking.

    Get an umbrella.

Really, there is very little you can do about a raptor going after your pets..

There are things you can do in your hard that will disrupt the owl , but if you now do them with the Intent of messing with the owl you can get in big trouble..

I'm in Carmel, and I've thrown out crackle balls a few times to run off a big flock of birds during migration season. It's stuff you can buy at the grocery store in June. It's not that damn loud, just runs them off. You see how much poop a whole flock of birds can drop on your car? I have a miniature schnauzer, which is probably pretty ambitious for the owls I've had around here, but yeah, give them some motivation to fly off.

Great Horned Owl - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"These birds hunt at night by waiting on a high perch and swooping down on prey. Prey can vary greatly based on opportunity. The predominant prey group are small to medium-sized mammals such as hares, rabbits (statistically the most regular prey[12]), juvenile raccoons, rats, squirrels, mice, moles, voles, shrews, bats, armadillos, muskrats, weasels and gerbils. It is even a natural predator of prey two to three times heavier than itself[12] such as porcupines,[13] marmots[14] and skunks.[15] Birds also comprise a large portion of a Great Horned Owl's diet, ranging in size from kinglets to Great Blue Herons. Waterbirds, especially coots and ducks, are hunted; even raptors, up to the size of Red-tailed Hawk and Snowy Owls, are sometimes taken. Regular avian prey includes woodpeckers, grouse, crows, pigeons, herons, gulls, quail, turkey and various passerines.[12][16] Reptiles (to the size of young American alligators[12]), amphibians, fish, crustaceans and even insects[17] are only occasional prey. In addition, the Great Horned Owl will predate on domesticated cats[18][19] and small or young dogs.[20][21][22]

These birds also have 200-300 pounds per square inch of crushing power in their talons. An average adult human male has about 60 pounds per square inch in his hands."

    Can you say "felony"?
It's what you will become very familiar with if you do this to a raptor of any type.
