Hey guys! I'm on the market for a .22 rifle. I've been looking at the tactical .22s like (mp-15-22) and the ruger 10/22. I've also just heard about .22 conversions for ar15s, but I heard it makes your rifle a lot dirtier especially in the gas system. Basically what I'm asking is... Would I be better off getting a rifle dedicated for .22? Or would a conversion be okay? If I go the dedicated .22 route, I'm not looking for match accuracy, I just want a reliable and modular .22. Thanks for your input!

I would highly recommend the 10/22 , the new takedown model is high on my list of needs!

M&P if you use an AR as well makes for good practice. The 10/22 is the most customizable platform on the planet for .22's. Don't think you can go wrong with either choice.

Go with a 10/22 and tweak to your heart's content. Basic models are very affordable to get started, and Ruger makes good 25rd mags.

A dedicated .22 would allow you to arm more people if needed (a conversion kit is only useful as a club if the rifle is configured for another caliber). Also, if for some reason you decide to part with a 10/22, they're pretty easy to sell.

Yea the 10/22 might cost more than a Remington, Mossberg, or others, but it is a proven reliable design, and its resell value is much better. Customizing is not a big priority of mine, since I don't want to put $500 into a plinker, but at least I know I can easily add a threaded barrel when I get a suppressor. Side note, there are a lot more threaded barrels available for the bull barrel 10/22's.

unless you have a lot of money and parts invested in an AR lower already, I'd get a standalone rifle.
I have a 10/22 though and I enjoy it too. Not a big fan of polymer on my rifles, so I'm sort of biased.

I might as well through this out there. With the CZ 455 bolt action you can shoot 22LR, 22Mag and 17HMR by simply swapping the barrels. You can buy the Combo with the 22LR and 17HMR and buy a 22 Mag bbl later. Great guns, very accurate and with the barrel change capability very versatile. Other calibers are in the works as well. :twocents:

Out of your choices I'd recommend the 10/22.

If you were asking me personally I'd steer you towards a Marlin 60 or a Stevens 87b. But I am heavily biased on the Stevens 87b. :D

Thanks for the replies. The info is appreciated. I think I am leaning more towards a dedicated .22. Another gun to the collection is always nice. :)

I just picked up the 10/22 a couple weeks ago and have been loving it. It's very accurate right out of the box and if you want/like the tactical look you have a million options. I 2nd a lot of the previous posts. The 10/22 is an all around great gun. Plus, Ruger makes a factory 25 rd mag. I can't speak about getting an AR and swapping out the bolt mechanism but 22LR are a very dirty round so it does make sense - but I have no experience...

I am looking into the 10/22 and there is one thing that's almost make or break for me... I've seen that they have 50rd drums out. But I don't know too much about reliability. From what I've seen so far from reviews is that it goes either way. Does anyone have experience with drum mags for 10/22? Thanks for info

Shooter Ridge makes a 50rnd mag for the 10/22 - though it is a giant POS! I bought one for mine and can't even get the rounds to load into the mag correctly. AVOID!

I'm going to ditto everyone who has recommended the 10-22, mostly because you said you wanted something modular and it doesn't get more modular than a 10-22. I would advise staying away from the conversions, we see them a fair amount at Appleseeds and they don't have a very good reliability record.

The Mossberg Plinkers seem to be pretty inexpensive. I don't see them mentioned. Anyone have any comments about them?

I have a 702 plinkster with thousands and thousands of rounds through it and its awesome! for the price ($110) you cant beat it. It is essentially a marlin model 60 with a detachable magazine. I put close to 2000 rounds through mine before I ever took it apart and cleaned it. the 715 plinkster is the same gun just in a cheap ar style stock. Ive got the 702 and a 10/22 and would recommend either one of them :yesway:
