have a remington 870 pump that will do the job of course . but my body is aging and it hurts a bit more to fire it than in years gone by.
have my eye on the mossberg 930 model . checked gun broker , found it's a wee bit pricey , around $700-$800 range .

does anyone have or have shot this model of shotgun ? any other maker make one of similar configuration that is good to go ?
do not want to go in to the real expensive stuff , $ 1000 & up . thanks

If you're used to the 870, just move to the Rem 870 20 gauge. The tactical version has a nice pistol grip and adjustable stock for better control.

Have you tried the lower recoil loads? I have some 960 and I believe 990's they are easier on the shoulder. I used them in my Mossberg JIC. New shooters enjoy shooting it. And it's my bedside gun. I put a Pacmayr hand grip on it too.

I recommend the Mossberg 500 HS410. I have one, and my wife is more than comfortable shooting it at the range, and she is ready to use it at home, if it is ever necessary.

    500 Tactical - HS410 Home Security | O.F. Mossberg & Sons

There are 6 listed on Gunbroker for under $400 right now. Think I got mine out the door for $370, couple years back.

This is the ammo I use, and recommend...

Cheap 410 Gauge Ammo For Sale - 3" 15 BB Shot - 2 000 Buck Shot Ammunition in Stock by Sellier & Bellot - 25 Rounds

That is an average price, do a search or ask your favorite LGS, you might find it cheaper. I get mine at the local Rural King for ~$25/box.

Just my opinion, and what works for my home.

Maybe add a recoil reducer? I've seen one that goes into the hole for the stock bolt.

But another vote for the 870 or 500 in 20 also. Very effective.

Since HD guns don't have to be nor stay pretty you can go used.

Key word for you is pain so a used Remington 1100 or any Beretta like a 303 will give you a softer shooter. They are both gas operated. The 1100 you can look in $350 range, Beretta $500. Both cycle just fine on lower power 2 3/4" ammo.

The other thing that might help is cutting the stock a bit shorter and adding a lifesaver or kickeeze recoil pad.

If you are diligent, you can find some field guns with shorter barrels, like Special field 1100's, Browning A5's.

I think you might want to at least try the reduced recoil loads as well. Oftentimes a 12ga because of it's greater weight will, when shooting reduced recoil ammo, have a felt recoil no worse than a 20ga. Also some of the newer recoil pads really work well at softening the blow.

20g is plenty of gun. No issues there.

The call for a semi auto is good advice as well. The first time I shot one I was surprised how much recoil the action cycling sucks up.

Old guns, but one of the handiest lowest recoiling shotguns ever made. The High Standard 10-B.

I have a Winchester 1897 (U.S. WW II vintage) riot gun. Of course it's 12 gauge and only has a butt plate. It seems to be softer shooting than my 12 gauge Remington 870.

KSG is ideal, I agree. But he isn't looking to replace a 12g with another 12g

Actually I think he is, since he asked for info on the Mossberg 930 . He just isn't looking for a $1000 gun though.
OP you should be able to get into a NIB 930 Home Security for under $600 OTD. I'm seeing $575 for my zipcode's dealers at GOG and they can usually be beat.
