It's fun seeing this plot thicken!

    2 'nitpicks':

1)No need to disengage the safety on an M9 to clear the chamber.

2)I think "Mr Johns" being indignant would be more plausible if it was a case of "Dubois" being detained because staff spotted his pistol instead of finding him drunk and unconcious with it by the swimming pool--that and his wife not being informed of his whereabouts

The rest of Terrance’s Friday consisted of a stop off at a chain burger place to get a box of small gut bomb burgers he and Knotty loved, a stop at the gas station to top off the truck and fill a can that Terrance had put in the truck and some couch time with his favorite mutt. After filling themselves up and watching some TV Terrance called it a night and turned in kind of early.

Morning came and Terrance was forced to recall why he shouldn’t feed Knotty people food let along the small burgers, they gave Knotty terrible gas. The bedroom smelled like dead rotten cow. Maybe it was the onions they were cooked on, who knows, all Terrance knew was that Knotty was going to have to spend the day outside.

After his normal Saturday morning routine Terrance decided to look at the garden to see if it needed any more work before tilling the thing under. He always tilled in fertilizer he got from the older Amish man down the road in the fall. It helped keep his garden soil dark and rich, something most didn’t have around the area.

Shortly after Terrance bought the place he paid a friend of his what others thought had to be a rather ridiculous amount of money to truck in a couple tandem loads of the rich black dirt from the family farm some 90 miles to the West in Illinois. Deep dark black dirt would grow wonderful vegetables.

Terrance put some effort into keeping the soil rich by tilling in manure from the Amish farm down the road. A mixture of rabbit and cow dung with some lime added in for good measure. Every couple of years Terrance would have the local co-op come out and sample the dirt to make sure he was keeping it where he wanted.

He recalled seeing a piece of mail from the CO-OP and figured the samples that he and the soil manager took a couple weeks back were back and he would know what to do with the dirt. He made a note to check it before he headed outside.

The double raised beds were great for everything but tilling. The old Ford as too big and the walk behind made it fun trying to not fall off the sides. But it was a good days work to pull the ropes, supports, wires, cages and markers from all of the different crops Terrance grew and turn the dirt over.

As with many things Terrance kept a log of what was planted where and how well it did. Then he would rotate the crops to see if it was the soil, sun or just mother nature making the plants produce or not.

After going through the mail, which was mostly junk, Terrance found the report on the soil samples from the CO-OP. Nothing too out of the ordinary. The natural fertilizer Terrance used had been keeping the soil balanced and rich with nutrients.

In order to get the fertilizer he had to go talk to the old Amish man who lived down the road. Since they didn’t believe in phones or modern technology he would have to take a ride down to his farm and speak directly to him.

Terrance thought it was a good time to put a little time on the 4 wheeler, it didn’t get ridden much. Unless it was used for deer hunting or Alia taking it for a ride around the property the thing just sat in the barn. Terrance uncovered it and found that it had a flat front tire. “Damn hedge thorns.” Terrance was always fighting them.

Osage Orange, otherwise known as Hedge Apples or Hedge trees were all around the back border of the farm. They had big thorns that filled their branches and sometimes the branches would fall on the trails Terrance had cut through the back thicket and if you run over them sometimes they would poke a hole in a tire.

Oh well Terrance thought, he could always get the old enduro bike out and see if she wanted to run. After some messing and a little kicking over the engine the old faithful 2 stroke bike fired up.

Terrance rode down the road to the older Amish farmer who was out in the barn lot moving sheep around.

To be respectful Terrance always stopped his vehicle, bike, quad, what have you, at the end of the drive and slowly walked up the drive. The older Amish seemed to appreciate it. If there had been a gate closed he knew to wait at the gate and not cross onto their land without being invited.

Walking up Terrance saw the two younger females who were outside hanging laundry put things down and go inside the house. The teenage boy who was tending to some goats in the front pasture came running over to the fence by the drive and walked inside the fence at the same pace as Terrance but didn’t speak. Terrance nodded at the young man and kept walking. After a few steps Terrance told the boy, probably 13 years old that he was there to speak to his father about some manure. The boy nodded and ran off to tell his father about their visitor.

As Terrance walked into the barn yard an older bearded man walked out of the barn and approached him. Terrance spoke slowly, “Hello, I would like to inquire about purchasing some manure for my garden.” The older man looked Terrance in the eye and simply asked “how much of what kind?” Terrance informed him he would like to have one small wagon load of cow and a half load of rabbit manure, the same as he had purchased last fall. The older man stood there for a few seconds then replied, $20 for the cow, $10 for the rabbit. Terrance shook his head yes and slowly reached into his pocket for his wallet. After paying the man $30 the man said later today and Terrance nodded then walked back down the drive to the bike and went home.

Terrance left the gate open then put the bike away. He then messed with the small walk behind rear tine tiller he had bought years back to make sure it was ready for the work of turning the manure into the soil. He checked the tire pressure, oil level and topped off the fuel before inspecting the belts and transmission lube level. Once he had gotten it checked and started it up he moved it out of the barn and out near the garden. Terrance looked at his watch, it was only about 1PM and he figured he would have time to eat lunch before the manure arrived.

Knotty barked to let Terrance know that the first load of manure was pulling in the drive. The young boy who Terrance had seen at the farm and an older boy probably 16 holding the reigns of a once horse draw wagon.

Terrance walked outside swallowing the last bite of his sandwich as the horse draw wagon rounded the small curve in the drive. The older boy spoke to the horse who was used to working and they stopped. The younger boy waved and then held his hands up in the air as if to say he didn’t know Terrance assumed they wanted to know where to put the manure.

Motioning to follow him Terrance walked towards the garden with Knotty right by his side. The boys stopped the wagon just short of the first raised bed. Their wagon wouldn’t fit between the beds but Terrance was sure to leave room around them when he put them in.

The older boy tied the reigns around the brake on the wagon and jumped down. The younger boy reached behind the seat and pulled out two shovels. Terrance spoke up, “If you boys want to spread it evenly across the top of these four beds I will gladly pay you for the effort?” The younger of the two asked how much. Terrance replied, “I will pay you both $10 if you spread this load and the other that I paid your father for.” The boys looked at each other and for the first time since they arrived the older boy smiled, nodded yes and the younger boy replied “you have a deal.”

The boys worked for the better part of 30 minutes throwing shovel full after shovel full of the dirt clod size and smaller cow manure and straw onto the beds. Terrance figured the wagon held about 3 yards of manure, maybe 4 the way it was mounded up. Well worth the $20 he paid, especially since it was delivered. And the $20 he paid the boys to unload and spread it was well worth it.

Terrance went into the barn while the boys worked at unloading and spreading the manure. He was going over his garden log and making sure he had things recorded that he wanted before he tilled the manure in. As the boys finished up the unload Terrance walked out and asked if they wanted paid now or later. The older boy responded with later, said they would return shortly with the rabbit manure and they took off down the drive with the clip clop of the horse hooves on the rock drive.

Terrance positioned the two aluminum ramps on the first bed and fired up the tiller. After getting it turned over he moved the ramps to the other end of the first bed so he could simply drive the tiller to the next bed. He positioned them such that he didn’t have to drive the tiller back down to ground level then back up the ramps onto the next bed.

He was about done with the third bed when the boys returned with the half load of rabbit manure. He asked them to start on the already turned beds first and was able to get the fourth bed turned by the time they got to the last of the load. They had made quick work of the load spreading the small marble size dung all over the four beds. Terrance ran the tiller down the ramps off the last bed and shut the engine off as the boys were scraping out the last of the manure.

After paying the boys he asked if they would mind shutting the gate when they left. They both shook their head and with a snap of the reigns they were gone down the drive.

I like your work. I agree with an earlier poster - quotation marks and spacing help us readers. Not to be a Grammar Nazi, I really had no real trouble reading your story. Some stories I quit because I just can't follow. Punctuation and such do make reading easier, but the way you write it flows smoothly.

    Thanks for your hard work.

Just as Terrance got everything put up it started to rain. He was glad he got everything done to the garden, the rain would help dissolve the manure. Terrance made it in the house and went to get cleaned up, as he emptied his pockets his phone went off. It was Alia, she was letting him know that she would be home in the morning and would stay through Tuesday morning.

Knowing that Alia wasn’t going to be around Terrance thought he would check with Diana and see what she was doing. He text her. It only took about 10 minutes for her to text back, he was in the shower when her “up for anything” text came through.

Terrance stood there half dry in a towel and replied to Diana’s text with a simple “Pizza?” and then went to get finished ready. As he was sitting down to put socks on his phone beeped, her reply, “Reading my mind Johns.” Terrance giggled as he stood up to put a belt and shirt on.

Once he was ready and had fed and taken care of Knotty Terrance sent Diana a message stating he was leaving and they he would be by to pick her up. As it was still a little rainy he decided to take the truck thinking to himself “Ms. Kitty did not need to be out on wet roads, she would have been a handful with all that horse power” and once out the gate he made his way to Diana’s.

Terrance pulled in the driveway at Diana’s and noticed the inside front door was open. He took it as a sign to come on in but still knocked and paused before walking in. Just as Terrance opened the door Diana’s son came to see who had knocked. The two of them paused and in a little bit of an awkward moment Terrance realized he hadn’t met Diana’s son yet.

As Terrance stuck his hand out to shake the boys hand he asked “Adam?” he was wiping his hands off with a red shop towel and replied, “Yeap, you must be Terrance?” to which Terrance nodded and the two shook hands. Adam apologized if he had gotten any dirt on Terrance’s hand, Terrance looked, showed his hands to the boy and said nope, GTG, the boy giggled, having been a son of a military parents he knew what that meant. Adam motioned towards the kitchen and living room as he said “Mom said she will be ready in a minute, if you like you can wait in the kitchen or living room.”

Terrance looked around, then asked “What you working on?” Adam, eager to share his score replied with a come on motion and they walked to the garage door between the kitchen and living room. As the cleared the door Terrance could see what Adam and an older gentleman were working on a pair of axles.
Adam motioned to Terrance and the older gentleman and introduced them, “Terrance this is my Dad, Adrian.” Terrance tried to stay calm as he shook the man’s hand and spoke “Nice to meet you” and then directly diverted attention to the axles.

“So what you guys working on?” he asked. Adam looked at his Dad who then nodded to explain. Adam walked over to the two axles which were sitting on stands in the middle of the floor. “These are new axles” Adam’s Dad cleared his throat to signal the boy he had misspoke, Adam continued, “These are new to me, (he air quoted) “used” axles for my Jeep” Terrance recognized them from their differential covers and asked “Dana’s?” to which Adam surprisingly replied “yeah, we are checking them out and going to replace or rebuild whatever they need.”

Terrance was quite knowledgeable about 4x4’s having lifted and wheeled plenty in his younger days and he knew exactly what was driving the boy to spend his hard-earned money and time on these machines.

Trying to not over power the influence of the boy’s father Terrance asked Adrian which lift kit they were going to use? Adam answered before his Dad could, “I am looking at a Rough Country 6 inch Long Arm kit.” Terrance was nodding with an agreeable shake to his head. The boys Dad stepped up and said “yeah and 37 inch tires on bead lock rims.” Showing his pride in the boys efforts.

Terrance thinking out loud blurted out “a nice set of 4.56 gears would help turn those big treads.” And it was evident right away that neither Adam or his Dad had thought about that issue. Terrance continued to suggest that they purchase the master kit which included all of the bearings, seals and fasteners to complete the swaps.

From the doorway comes “I am ready” from the beautiful Diana. “Well” Terrence voiced as he shook Adam and his Dads hands, “it was a pleasure to meet you both, have fun with the swap.” Terrance then turned and walked towards the door and winked at Diana.

Diana waited for Terrance to close the door then grabbed him by the arm, turned him around, pushed him against the garage door and gave him a big kiss. Terrance, who was somewhat surprised at the kiss was grinning from ear to ear when she whispered “thanks for being such a gentleman.”

They walked outside. Terrance opened her door and giggled and with his hand made a Vanna White gesture showing her the seat. Diana laughed and sat in the seat of the Toyota pickup. Terrance shut the door and walked around the truck laughing at himself, he thought that this woman must really like him to be going out to dinner in an old Toyota pickup. He thought to himself he should go out and buy a newer truck for rainy date nights like tonight. Ms. Kitty has always been his show off, nice ride, date night vehicle.

Terrance asked her where would she like to eat. Diana looked at him, slid over to the middle of the truck carefully straddling the shifters and softly replied, I want Mackgoo’s deep dish.

Terrance giggled as he reached between her legs and put the truck in gear and away they went. Diana leaned towards Terrance putting her head on his shoulder and they enjoyed a quiet ride to the simple pizza place they both loved but had never been there together.

Pulling up to Mackgoo’s the parking lot it looked about half full, typical for about 8 PM on a Saturday night. Terrance didn’t have a chance to open the passenger door, Diana climbed out the drivers side. Terrance giggled as she shut the door. Diana looked at him and asked “What?” to which he replied “nothin” and they went in the door and had dinner.

Walking out Diana almost dropped the to-go container with the remainder of their food. Terrance remarked that it would be a tragedy of the best deep dish around took a header onto the ground.

Once they were in the truck Diana asked “now what?” Terrance quickly came back with “whatever you want darling” and Diana simple commented “drinks?” and they took off for a local watering hole close to where Diana lived.

Without Diana’s input Terrance relied on his own recon of the area around her house and they went to DJ’s Pub, one of a couple places close to where Diana lived. Pulling in the lot looked rather full. Terrance asked Diana if this place was ok, her “it’s fine” should have alerted him to the place not being as good as he had thought.

Walking in Terrance could tell it wasn’t Diana’s favorite place. He had spent enough time with her to realize when she wasn’t really into something.

After walking in and finding a high-top table near the bar Diana excused herself to the bathroom.

Terrance tried to ask before she left what she wanted to drink, if she heard him over the background noise of the music, talking and pool being played she ignored him. Terrance being the protective sort decided to keep an eye on Diana as she made her way across the bar to the bathroom.

He patiently waited for her return, keeping an eye on the bathroom. Terrance noticed her walking out of the bathroom and a guy stop her by stepping in front of her. Terrane immediately went into sheepdog mode making a bee line for Diana.

As Terrance got within striking distance Diana noticed him and walked around the man who had stopped her. Diana, who was normally a strong and independent woman was suddenly vulnerable and defenseless. “Problem?” Terrance asked. Diana who had now positioned herself behind and to the side of Terrance grabbed his left arm at the elbow and motioned towards the door they came in.

Terrance couldn’t exactly hear all of what the man said but he could tell by the look in his eye that he wouldn’t have to worry about the guy coming at him. Terrance nodded slightly and gave the guy a slight left eye wink as if to say smart choice boy as he backed away from the guy. His buddies who had been playing pool at a nearby table had taken notice and were walking up behind the guy.

Terrance felt Diana pull his arm a little harder and decided it was time to leave as he backed up from the guy and now his two buddies not taking his focus off of them and letting Diana sort of guide him out of the confrontation.

Once they got outside and safetly in the truck Terrance simply said “Well, that was fun” and asked Diana if she was ok. She simply nodded yes. Terrance didn’t push the issue and then asked “where to?” and Diana replied “anywhere but here” and they left the parking lot and Terrance headed to the other close by bar and grille that also had pool and darts. “The Bull’s Eye” was only a couple minutes away.

Diana was out of the truck quickly having sat on the passenger side near the door and not next to Terrance. As they walked to the door Terrance stopped Diana and asked, “Are you ok?” she nodded yes, he continued as she looked him in the eye, “do you want to go home?” to which she smirked and replied “Hell no, I need a shot!” and they walked inside.

Terrance followed Diana instead of walking beside her or slightly in front of her as was his normal practice. She was on a mission.

Diana was ordering a shot and a beer when he caught up to her at the bar. She turned and look at Terrance and asked “what do you want hunny?” which both surprised and excited Terrance. “Well babe, I will have what you are having.” Diana made a funny face of surprise and without questioning him turned her attention to the bartender, a rather attractive young man and added “Make that two of each” and he went scurried away to work on her order.

Terrance was reaching for his wallet when Diana turned and stopped him, putting her hand on his arm, she looked him in the eye and muttered “ I am sorry, I got this” and she waved a fifty dollar bill at him. He smirked, grinned and replied “whatever you say babe” with a smile. She beamed, winked and turned back to the bartender who was dropping off the two drafts beers. He spoke up waving his hand “be right back with the Jameson” as Diana was trying to give him the money.

Diana picked up one of the pints and handed it to Terrance, after picking up hers she turned to him and offered it up for a toast. Terrance beat her to the punch and blurted out “Here is to the future babe!” and Diana, mouth open, stopped dead in her thought, smiled and touched his glass with hers as she said “To us hunny” and they both took a drink of the rather heavy amber beer.

They both turned to the bar tender as he was pouring the second of four shot glasses full of Jameson. Diana looked over at Terrance as he was taking a sip of the beer and noticed his eyes get big as he realized she had asked for two shots each.

Terrance noticed her looking at him, turned and looked at her as he pulled the glass away from his mouth rapidly swallowed so he could speak. “Well then, looks like I am in for it” and Diana smiled winked and turned back towards the bar tender handed him the money, picked up two shots and handed one to Terrance.

Terrance took the shot, sat his beer down, swapped hands and then held it up for her toast. Diana held up her shot, touched glasses, sat it on the bar without letting it go, picked it up and offered it up for another touch. Terrance repeated the exact same action and they both threw the shot back and swallowed without a word.

Diana took the shot as smooth as breathing. She liked whiskey. Terrance on the other hand grimaced and tried to act like a manly man swallowing the liquid showing her that he was taking one for the team. Terrance wasn’t much for whiskey drinker. His beverage of choice was top shelf vodka.

Terrance sat the empty shot glass on the bar, before he could reach for his beer to chase the shot Diana handed him the second one. Terrance slowly shook his head side to side, and took the shot out of her hand and squared his body to hers. Diana turned and looked Terrance dead in the eye and held the glass up. As Terrance touched glasses with her Diana spoke, “To us” and with a smile Terrance repeated it. ‘To us” and they took the second shot. Terrance’s mouth and throat were still numb from the first shot as he swallowed the second.

Diana winked as he looked back down at her and the fiery liquid hit his stomach. Terrance smiled as the feeling of the whiskey warmed him. Diana then picked up her beer, motioned to Terrace to pick up his then thumbed through the change, leaving the bar tender a five-dollar bill and walked around the bar to a small booth in the corner.
