For me, the best upgrades I made with my AR have been:

1: I learned how to shoot rifles (for me, appleseed)
2: USGI sling (modified by adding extra quick detach so I can clip in and out at both ends of sling).
    3: Hogue grip (it's griptastic)
4: telescopic scope for long range

thanks to those of you who actually posted things they have put on or like on an AR. i think alot of you missed he point. ive been shooting for most of my life and i am pretty proficient.. i was just wondering what you have on your AR, not what i should do with mine or telling me to "practice." Owning and firearm and practicing with it go hand in hand with ammo and mags..:twocents:

Hey Im about to embark on yet another AR build. Just really wondering what top 5 upgrades everyone on here is making to thier firearms and why. Theres no order of importance. Mine would be. Besides the obvious mags and ammo. because mags and ammo are required for the gun to function. In my opinion those are not upgrades.

    1. Optics and BUIS- Quicker target acquisition.
    2. 3-4# Trigger- Faster follow up shots
    3. Sling- To take the load off your arms, or to hold your firearm while you do something else.
    4. Flash Hider- For concealment.
    5.Foregrip- Steadier aim.

    Ready. Aim. Fire.:ar15::popcorn:

    My AR:
    DPMS .223 16" free-float, flat-top upper

    My upgrades:
    1. USGI sling for support
    2. Scope rings
    3. Scope that came with a Remington 700 (duplex reticle)
    [STRIKE]4. 2 P-mags
    5. New case[/STRIKE]

I know mags don't count, and a case doesn't either, but it's all I've done to mine. Shoots 3 moa out to 300 yards, 5 moa out to 600 yards with 55 gr Federal bulk.

Really should get a new trigger, though. I will admit that the trigger is pretty nasty, but it seems to do the job.

I am a real stickler for making sure my AR is not over/under gassed. Thats the main reason I went with an 18" barrel and rifle gas. I hate how unpleasant an overgassed AR feels (my previous Delton middy). I would spend some time making sure that my gas setup (system length, port size) and my buffer work well together both for comfortability sake and for reliability.

    1. rebar cutter assembly
    2. bayonet
    3. flare launcher
    4. multicam paint job
    5. anything/everything from magpul

also, some kind of sweet laser engraving on the mag well. a grim reaper, or skull and crossbones, or something along those lines. you know, something that lets people know that when youre not in your cubicle sucking down big macs youre a soulless killing machine.

not necessarily in any order, but theyre all musts for me.

I've got mine set up just like I do in Call of Duty, that way, I can train at home when not on the range.:ar15:

I like the MOE grip for storing extras like springs, firing pin, and 2 extra rds. Maybe some other things.
I also keep small container of lite weight gun oil. I also like the grip itself. 20.00
I have a flat top and put 8-32 optics with 1' o'clock offsets for buis. Offsets were 20.00 from ebay.
BUIS were 75.00 for pair from surplus ammo.com
I put a rubber pad on rear stock for comfort and noise reduction.
My optic has built in bubba. If i didnt have one I would consider getting one.
I use a 3 point sling but in service just used the 2 point. Like both.
Last useful item was surefire 950 with light and IR / blue light. This was the most and was 550.00
It is warrantied for life. Has 2 pressure pads for primary light and rear pad for upclose reading or blood
Trail. Surefire has quality but cost alot too.
    Good luck

When I bought my first production AR-15 I made several changes:

    1. Free Float Forend (better accuracy)
    2. Vertical Foregrip (better stability/controllability)
    3. Bipod (who needs a bench when you can lay down and stabilize your weapon)
    4. Magpul Trigger Guard & Stock (I HATE CAR stocks and flat trigger guards)
    5. Sling and Heavier Buffer (better then hand carrying and less recoil)

I have since sold that rifle and all the components I put on it (I don't consider BUIS as a modification/upgrade seeing as how you need some sort of sighting system to be able to effectively shoot). If I were to make a list of 5 modifications/upgrades now it would be as follows, however, this is in no specific order:

    1. Free Float Forearm (for increased accuracy)
    2. Foregrip *AFG or VFG* (for better stability)
    3. Muzzle Brake (for better recoil impulse and quicker follow up shots)
    4. Heavier Buffer (for less recoil impulse and quicker follow up shots)
    5. Sling (for easier carry when not firing)
