We are looking into 4-H for my sons but information on what the local groups actually do is hard to come by....

Each county is pretty specific. In our county, the clubs are split up geographically by township, but then when a person chooses a specific project, such as shooting sports, workshops will be run for the project with participants from all the clubs.

Didn't you guys get the memo? There are no inherent difference between any individuals, yet we must celebrate each person's uniqueness.

All the while denying that any of us are unique no doubt. And, in the spirit of camaraderie, when someone acheives a badge, everyone gets to have one too. A new gender neutral name will need to be created because 'scout' sounds militaristic. You cannot call them 'united' because some may want to join, but not be united with the others. So, they'll come up with a name like the 'Gathering of Gender Neutral Participants of America'. Except, you'll have to drop the 'America' because we would not want immigrants that choose to keep their allegiance to their home country to feel left out. Can't wait to hear how the next 'Gathering of Gender Neutral Participants' jamboree turns out. I'm guessing it will be like a kids version of Woodstock.

Watch the movie classic "Follow Me Boys" with Fred MacMurray as the lovable Scoutmaster....now go get your current rules of scouting manual out. The poor scoutmaster would be sitting in jail, half the boys would be undergoing psychiatric treatment for being too aggressive, too dangerous, and for having a bad parent or two. At least one LGBTQW protest would be going on in front of the scout house, and PETA would be there to spew venom on any kid caught eating a fish he just caught....

    We're screwed.

I had a Brownie when I was in Cub Scouts.......She was real cute too......:):

The things we did in Boy Scouts then would definitely be offensive with today's standards.

    Welcome to "The P**** Scouts!"

In my time as a Scout, I don't remember any squirt guns, anyway. Plenty of real guns, plenty of cooking over campfires, canoeing, hiking, service projects, etc., but no squirt guns.

Brandon Morse put together an article on the subject.

Taking the Boy Out of the Boy Scouts

I think the article confuses a boy's tendency to do dangerous things with being dangerous. Not the same thing.

When I was at Ft. Riley they used to have Boy Scouts on base doing things all the time. The BSA was often seen as a feeder program for the US military and they wanted them to have a positive image of the military. Eagle Scouts join as an E-2 instead of E-1 unless things have changed. BSA is eligible for military surplus as a "Educational Service of Special Interest". Now they can't play with water guns? Well, hoorah for the demilitarization of scouting, I suppose.

You guys can rag on the BSA as much as you want, but it is STILL the largest (and best, IMO) organization in existance promoting leadership training and outdoor skills. We still teach camping, cooking, backpacking, canoeing, first aid, leadership, wilderness survival in addition to shooting skills and firearm safety. It is changing, as is the world we live in, but it is STILL an excellent organization for young men. And being outdoors sure beats the heck out of the latest electronic video-game fad today.

Besides, though BSA may disallow paint-ball, and now apparently squirtguns , there is nothing preventing good friends that happen to be involved in scouting organizing a 'paint-ball war' or good old fashioned squirt-gun fight.

That's funny you should say that BBI...When I first opened the shop I bought a bunch of WW 2 surplus from a guy and had it listed here in the shop...Dad was in the Scouts (and the Explorers) in the 1950's and was checking out the pile of belts, canteens, half tents, pouches etc...that I had laying around the shop and began to chuckle...I asked him what was so funny and he said, "When we were in Scouts this was our camping gear and I can't believe it's now collectible.."

He went on to tell me that a group of Scouts hiking/camping back then looked like a US boys army from WW 2 and that EVERY single item of equipment they had was US WW 2 surplus with a healthy mix of German vet bring back canteens, cooking tins and Hitler Youth knives....

They still do. Alice packs, etc. You know, militarization of our nation's youth.

During my 18 yrs as a youth...the Boy Scouts are one of the highlights of my childhood. My wife says my scout masters are what helped shape me in to the man I became. My father was an over the road truck driver for many years of my youth and I saw him whenever he could make it home. She looks at the disfunction in my family today...and credits the Scouts with shaping me in to the man I became.

Feel free to bash them all you want over 1 or 2 decisions...but the organization is worth saving. My Eagle Scout is the ONLY thing from my time as a child that is still on my resume to this day. It gets the MOST comments of any single line on my resume. I am disappointed with some of the decisions the leaders have made...but its a volunteer organization. Feel free to step up and try to change it rather than sit on some message board and blast away about it.

No doubt, but this does not bode well for the future.

Have you seen the guns they use these days? I support wait times on acquiring them.

These things are only good for spraying large amounts of water droplets over a wide area in a short period of time. No person needs that much.

BSA banning squirt guns because they are simulated firearms makes me want to ask if they still have a Marksmanship merit badge? They did back in my days in the scouts (that was in the 1960s), and it was one of the merit badges I had the most fun with.
