BW, do you mean overall trades, including sales, purchases too? Or just a literal "trade".

And do you only us that are on this thread or everyone?
I'm sorry, I refer to most every transaction with INGOers as a "trade." Trading gear, trading money for gear, etc.

I was talking about those of us in this thread conversation.

I was also sure that CM would run away with his number, but...

Thanks for the reply, I see now. Just wasn't think straight. LOL.
No problem. With 1911s, generally you get what you pay for but for some reason we get people through all the time that thinks their Brand X is just as good as Brand Y even though it costs twice as much and that happens all along the scale, not just the RIA. The current example is usually Dan Wesson fans (which is a very good 1911), you will see them claim they are just as good as a Wilson Combat or Nighthawk. They aren't. There is a reason they cost twice as much, more attention to detail, more time on fit and finish. If some of that is not important to you or worth that extra expense, great.

    A fun quick thread jack...

Who has the record for the most trades with INGOer's posting in this thread? (Bet I know...)

Mine is five. And I apologize, if I have forgotten anyone.
I honestly wouldn't know for sure. If I don't have some kind of relationship with the person, I forget quickly.

Sig Blaster, did I sell you a Sig P226 once?

Other than that remote possibility, only 1 that I know of for sure.

Rock Island Armory Level. Bargain shoppers and no knock to them but if one reads what we do to these 1911's I put serious money into them.
Thanks for the reply. I understand now. I know very little about 1911's but I have seen some of your post about yours. I didn't even know that you meant Rock Island Armory with the RIA at first. You know us new guys. LOL.

I really did not want to come off as complaining either.
It just happens more than not.

I didn't take it as complaining. I just didn't know what RIA was. I know what you mean. Up until last year I hadn't bought any guns in over 15 years. Luckily I saw it coming just in time and was able to buy a few guns and a good amount of ammo at decent prices early in 2020. Since then I have had a few people offer me trades with their guns valued at todays prices and mine valued at pre panic values. It can get frustrating. Oh, and do you think I could get one of your custom 1911s for $500? ;) :wallbash:

I'd like to buy another M&P 2.0 compact, but I haven't seen one for what I paid for my current one; $349 plus a S&W $50 rebate. ;)

    What a civilized post!

When selling I'm very upfront about any defects. If they aren't interested once they check it out in person? No problem. Don't feel compelled to hand over the money if it isn't what you thought it was.

If I'm interested in something and don't get a reply within a reasonable amount of time, I assume they sold to someone else or have a deal in the works.

    Weird market right now.

Things are less goofy here than on armslist.

    Very good thread.
I have done alot of buying/selling in the nearly 4 yrs. while learning guns & enjoying "the hobby."
I've experienced all of the things mentioned here in the thread.
    My comments:

If I say I will buy it: it's sold. Period.
Only if it is not as described will I not.
That has happened once that I remember.
I went to buy a .22LR revolver, but the cylinder would not rotate.
I drove 45 minutes to get there.
The seller should have disclosed the issue.
    He knew better.
    Shame on him.
    Armslist seller.

I had a young man meet to buy a gun, who said he was from a family of gun owners & he had his LTCH.
After we met, he started to negotiate the price.
If he would have been older, I would have simply left & I let him know that.
I'm sure he was acting on advice of his Uncles/brothers/Father, who had told him the seller would not let him walk away over $25.
I would, just for the principle of it.
I let him know for future dealings with others that he could offer/negotiate anything he wanted before meeting.
But after saying he wanted it: end of negotiations (pending condition, as described, of course).
    Armlist buyer.

If a seller doesn't return contact, I will send him another pm/conversation the next day in case he didn't get it or missed it somehow (it's happens).
I feel a seller owes me: "it's sold," or his ad is marked "SOLD."
Again, Armlist, although there have been a couple on INGO have been very slow to respond.
But, I used to work 2 jobs myself & get it it some only have a short window to respond during the day.
When selling a gun though: I made time for a buyer, always.

I once went to pick up a gun I had been wanting for months.
2 guys got out of a pick up and headed my way.
I let them know I wondered what was going on since seller didn't mention bringing a friend.
No problem bringing a friend, but that should be disclosed imo.
If it would have been out in the boonies, I would have driven off.
I have met guys out in the boonies before, & I have driven by the meeting place before stopping to see if there was another car parked "around the corner."
    Again, Armslist.

I have never sold a gun that I haven't taken to the range for at least a function test.
I have bought a rifle & more than one handgun before that didn't work.
I called them & they gave me my money back twice that I remember.
Another time, it was an older & respected member here & I they had said they took it in on trade or bought it from a friend just to help them out, put it into the safe & never shot it.
Since he had disclosed that, I was fine with it.
I just sent it in to Smith & Wesson & they sent me a new one. Really. WOW, S/W.

When someone wants to buy in the future: "next week," or whatever, I let them know that I will sell to the 1st person who can meet together combined with being in Indy, not some driving distance away.
I've learned not to "hold" a gun. Discovered that literally half the time the person flakes out.
If it is someone I have a history with, I have held it before, since I'm never in a hurry, I just don't want to hold a gun that other buyers are waiting for & then deal falls through.
    It's happened.
Most of the time a real buyer is able to meet that day or the next.

You'll notice, most of the "indiscretions" have not been with INGO, but from another gun site.
I truly love INGO & have many wonderful friends here that I look forward to buying a gun from when they sell b/c I've been there & done that before & they have my full trust.
I love selling a gun to someone I've sold to before.
One time I bought a rifle from a close friend here on INGO, just to find out that CM had been the original owner & had done an upgrade or two on it: talk about the perfect scenario of trusted owners! :ingo:

6 INGO transactions so far and no complaints! Lots of good info in this thread too. My only complaint is not receiving rep for the transactions, I bought a gun and ammo in 2 separate transactions last month and haven't gotten rep for either. Full price, next day meet up, on time, etc. Gave them both rep, even messaged one of the guys and asked if he could rep me so others know I am good to go. I don't check profiles or anything so not sure if they have been back on since, but I would consider it common courtesy.

I try to get the sale done as soon as possible, buying or selling. I've never had a problem, but have read of many stories of despair from nonchalance to simply well-intentioned life getting in the way of finishing the transaction.

As soon as a deal is struck, I try to quickly work in my sentiment on the meet. "The sooner, the better for me."

"I'm an hour out from you, and can be in the car shortly."

Done many deals, all in the same day.

I was once Johnny on the spot for iTrader ratings, until I bought (or sold?) a pistol to another seasoned member/trader. They suggested that they'd be happy to do it, but if was all the same, we could just pass on repping each other. We had 100% ratings anyway, and no reason to be digitally documenting transactions on the forum. :tinfoil:

Since that time years ago, I don't rep anyone that doesn't rep me first. I'll always return it, but don't take the initiative.

For the most part, buying, selling, and trading, have been good experiences for me on INGO. I feel like I am still new, always learning, and there have been a few things I will not repeat. I met a guy once, and was invited into his apartment for the gun purchase. I went. Didn't think too much about it at the time, but probably not the best move. Now I only meet in public spots. And as has been said, good communication is the key to a good meet and transaction. All my dealings have been very honest and I was happy with the deal, so I will keep it up.

    This has been helpful. Thanks!

Agreed on the rep issue. I had a few transactions where I repped the other party but did not receive rep, even after reminding them.

On the rep item; I could rarely seem to figure out how to do the rep on the old site. I tried every time, but usually gave up.

With the new site, I have no idea.

That said, BW makes a good point about leaving a footprint. Considering I don't record my sales and quickly forget whoI sold to, it makes sense to not record the transaction somewhere else.

Rep on the the old site was a kind of measure if respect. It was for messages and was a way of seeing what others thought about a member.

The closest equivalent to the rep system in this new software is the like button.

Feedback for deals OTOH can be important for someone newer to the forum. Not only the quantity, but who you get it from. Someone with few feedbacks, but from active known forum members is a positive IMO. Feedback can help members who don't post as often or who haven't met other members FTF.

To leave feedback with the new system tap on the person's avatar and then on their rating. That will take you to the page where you can leave feedback.

I think it's important to have a good feedback record that members can access. I ALWAYS check feedback for the person I'm dealing with, along with their post history. (Another subject, but there are members I just wouldn't trade with due to their disagreeable postings.)

To be clear about my earlier statement, the other member and myself had many transactions of feedback. There was not a need to further establish ourselves as good to deal with.

After that time, I use the practice of giving feed back whenever it is given first.
