The latest threat to attack the United States during any standoff between China and Taiwan was issued Thursday in the Global Times, an official Chinese Communist Party mouthpiece that prints the regime's propaganda. "It is credible that the [People's Liberation Army] will heavily attack U.S. troops who come to Taiwan's rescue," the paper wrote. "Such credibility is increasingly overwhelming the deterrence that U.S. troops may have."


So do you think China would really risk war with the country that does the most business with it?

As an added measure they could flex their naval muscles in the South China Sea over which they claim also to have absolute sovereignty and embargo any US bound cargo from any other Asian country with which we may still be friendly. They may talk big and they may have the will to back it up if it comes to that but they can cripple us much more efficiently without resorting to a shooting war.

So if the US were to support let's say, South Korea in a War with North Korea, would we be surprised is North Korean troops attacked US troops supporting their enemy?

I guess I don't get the point of the the thread. If China and Taiwan were to go to war, why wouldn't China see any US troops in defense of Taiwan as enemies to be attacked as well?

And why would the US military be used to protect Taiwan anyways? Taiwan is is Taiwan's responsibility. They need to have full skin in the game of protecting themselves and not rely on some outside force for protection if they really want self determination.

They should be arming their people just like Switzerland.

Defending Taiwan is a tough challenge. Without US or Allied help, the Taiwan military will face an adversary with a 100 to 1 advantage in planes, ships and troops.

The 100 year anniversary of the founding of the Chinese Communist Party Central Commitee is in 2023. Xi has made statements that Taiwan will be under CCP control by then. We live in a political time much like 1935-38.

MIL and BIL/family live in Taipei. I’ve been trying to convince them to move here; they have dual citizenship so I assume that would make it easier, but since FIL passed a year ago, MIL has been in a funk and not interested in leaving her home. BIL wants to come here but as the oldest son, he has to respect mom’s wishes, and manage the family firm. I hope they can get out before any SHTF, but since MIL is refusing the “vax” her travel options are restricted. I’m converting the house to a 5 br so we’ll even have room for them but so far she’s not budging. Going to to be costly for us to defend Taiwan, China has the advantage controlling that area....anything we move near there will be destroyed by China.....meaning all out war with China.....we won't do it. NATO will do nothing and could care less, The UN doesn't even recognize Taiwan and could care less. This is a Civil War continued, it just came to a stand still. Taiwan has had many years to prepare for whats coming.....They should of declared themselves Independent and backed it up by developing nuclear weapons to destroy China of any attack. Instead they relied on the US for help. If China destroys Taiwan in 3 days or less and take over, the world will look the other way rather than losing China's trade and goods. China created a bio-weapon called Covid and turned it lose on the world......the world did nothing except to keep buying gloves and masks from them. Goodbye Taiwan, you had a good run....should of got those nukes, you had the time and $$$. Can't blame anyone else but yourselves, you of all people knew why you all fled there to begin with.

That requires a Declaration of War from congress. Not the presidential police actions since WWII. Will a Democrat congress declare war against the country they have so many ties? We targeted bad guys hiding among the civilians in the mountains of AFG, who are the bad guys we target on the merchant ship in open water?

Realities are these ships could have Americans on board, insured by American companies, carrying cargo owned, paid by American companies.

We dropped the nukes at the end of WWII to bring it to a swift end. It saved the lives of millions of troops and civilians, who would have died in an invasion. It also kept the USSR from taking the two northern main islands of Japan.
