About a year ago I was discussing firearms with a coworker about twenty years or so my junior. While I knew something about the guns he was espousing when I told him I was mostly into 1911’s and wheel guns especially of the single action variety he politely called me a Fudd. We both laughed and I thought perhaps there is something to that. Maybe I’m missing out on something. So over the last year I’ve tried guns out from all the major gun makers…. Polymer or steel I pulled triggers on a lot of different pistols and enjoyed them but didn’t love them. Some after I got them home and fidgeting with them didn’t even make it to the range LOL. Last week I picked up a pair of very nice Walthers (which I’ll need to sell) from another forum member and ran a couple of mags thru one of them. It’s a great pistol. But it’s just not me. So this morning I woke up and decided it’s time….. I’m happiest when I’m a Fudd!!!!

I also don't define fudd by interests in personal firearms but rather the attitude towards broader 2A things. I know that fudd is a dirty four-letter word around here, but I think fudds are also the closest allies we've got. I know several people who have no interests in ARs, AKs, etc, but believe that Americans should have the right to own, practice with, and use them. I would call those people non-fudds. Fudds are the 2A analog of people who are always proposing increasing taxes on "those other folks."

Enjoy what you enjoy, don't let folks shame you for it, and don't shame others for what guns they like ... I mean, unless it's a hi-point. To quote CM (hopefully he won't mind): If you like them, then run-em.

Huh, that's not what I was expecting.

The typical definition is someone who says, "Ar15? You don't need one of those! My side by side shotgun is the most someone should be allowed by law."

I'd just say you were outmoded, Noble Sniper.

A Fudd is someone who believes the only purpose of a firearm is historical or killing an animal.

A firearm for any other purpose, they believe no person should be allowed to own.

I'd say the word you're looking for is "boomer."
Yeah, I get PO'd when called a fudd because I am anything but and it shows a total lack of understanding on the part of the name caller.

    And I love a 1911.....

Fudd is just a blanket term at this point for "you like something I don't like" IMHO. As others have pointed out a Fudd is "you don't need a 30 round magazine and an assault rifle to hunt" type.

Hell I am all of 27 and have been called a Fudd multiple times for liking 1911's (apparently they are unreliable garbage but I never got that memo so FML). If you want to get the name caller MAD I have found "go be poor somewhere else" works really well to set them off. That being said , now that I ponder it I only own one "plastic fantastic" gun and I am also fine with that. Steel is real

Also jealous of the SA35, that's a nice piece! For some reason I really want the new FN version I really like what they did with it.

I appreciate the plastic stuff for what it is...practical tools for serious work. I have my share of that stuff and it serves its purpose, and can even be fun in its own way. But I've found what works for me in that realm, and I pretty much stick with that...I'm not interested in branching out my collection to include a broad variety of polymer.

When it comes to having fun and enjoying guns as a hobby, though, I really like the old stuff. My collection is full of steel and wood. Revolvers, a couple of 1911s, classic Sigs, Berettas, lever-actions, and lately, milsurps.

Some of this stuff is still practical. Maybe not better on paper than the latest plastic fantastic, but it works better for me for my specific purpose. The revolvers get carried daily in different applications, and some of the rifles have been used to kill stuff on occasion. But mainly I have them because I like them, enjoy shooting them, working on them, and loading for them. I appreciate their mechanical intricacies, their history, and their craftsmanship. They bring me joy. I guess if that makes me a fudd, then I am one...and you know what? I don't really care.

It depends on your definition of the word.
If you think only hunting rifles and shotguns should be legal, then I would consider you a Fudd.
I can't stand that kind of disrespect for the second amendment.
People who say, "if you can't hit something with 3 or 4 rounds, then you don't need to have a gun at all" are considered Fudds in my book.
I see the 45 ACP 1911 and revolver crowd as extreme enthusiasts or traditionalists.
Just don't tell me I'm wrong for carrying a polymer wonder 9 and I won't tell you you're wrong for carrying a 39 oz gun with an 8 round capacity.
I honestly would never carry a revolver or 1911, but I respect the people who do.

The 1911 has its perks for modern carry.

If you put slim grips on it, it can rival a lot of modern ultra compacts in width. That's why I carried one for a lot of years until I stopped worrying about printing.

With a GI guide rod and polymer mainspring housing, that weight can get silly low. At that weight with slim grips, anything +P gets to be a bit rough on the web of the hand, though.

I think the guy mispoke and meant to call you a "boomer" since what you described are older things.

A non boomer (or really anyone) would be pretty narrow minded to shoot a good 1911 or wheel gun and not realize how great they are.

    More power to ya man.
