My first shot with my new Gen 4 Glock 19 (not first time shooting a Glock) was a stovepipe. Then 2 out of every 10 ejected shells hit my face for the duration of 200 rounds.

I also noticed the two test fire casings in the box were steel casings. Is that strange??? Also, one of them was slightly pinched.

Thank you. I think I have the updated, 0-4-3 spring assembly. I believe there is an updated extractor, which I suspect is the problem.

Darn, I even bought a Glock Perfection hat. It's going on the shelf, till this is resolved - in the trash, if the problem isn't fixed.

There is no such a thing as a "Glock fail"!
As for the shells that hit your face, your face is just not at the right place.
The problem comes from your face and not the gun.
If you hold it side ways you should be able to dodge the shells better. :D

Or it could be the spring ...

Quick fix ... loosen your grip ... remove GLOCK ... insert 1911. :D

Relax ... I have a GLOCK 19 on my hip at this very second (and another one in the safe).

I can assure you, if the problem is the gun, Glock will make it good. The acronym SAMM is a good one when trouble shooting problems:

    S: Shooter (start here)
    A: Ammunition (second)
    M: Maintenance (third)
    M: Mechanical (final check)

Brilliant! Yeah, I had no problems with the Glock 26, or any other pistol for that matter. Certainly not a limp-wristing problem. My cousin, a more experienced shooter than I, had the same problems.

I asked the guy at the counter at the range, if he'd heard of any problems with the Glock 19, Gen 4. He said, "Absolutely not," and said I was "limp-wristing." I shook my head and walked away.

    I will contact Glock.

    Good advice!
S: Shooter (start here) I squeezed the gun as tight and steady as possible.
A: Ammunition (second) Both Federal and Winchester "white box" from Wal-Mart that has worked fine in all my other shooting.
M: Maintenance (third) Brand new gun from factory
    M: Mechanical (final check) ???

On a serious note ... this is very good advice. I've always taken the "start simple before moving to the complex" when analyzing a problem. Sometimes, simple means "less expensive." Also, only change one variable at a time.

From what I keep hearing, I'm not sure I would get anything but a Gen 3.

What about the steel casings from the factory test fire? Is that normal?

You mean the two casings that came with the gun? :dunno:
I dont see anything wrong with it, I think they use WOLF ammo because it's the cheapest, that's the only reason they use steel casings.
A Glock should have no problem shooting brass or steel.

    I agree with that.
The Gen4 is a totally new design since they changed that spring.
For me only the Gen3 is a proven design, it will take a few years to see if the new design is as good as the old one.

I just realized the OP had ONE stovepipe on the inaugural shot followed by 199 rounds firing ok (just getting hit in the head with the spent casings). I wouldn't sweat it yet. Chalk it up to a new gun and see what happens at the next range session. You said you have the updated/replacement spring from GLOCK already installed?

OK, I thought that might be the case, but wasn't sure because my first new Glock had brass. Makes sense.
