Meh, don't follow the issues, just sounds like leadership on both sides playing the same old game.

On the one hand, the idea of a nation deciding to fragment rather than join the tumor of "globalization" is a great thing, but I don't understand why exactly they want to separate. Is there some advantage the Scots hope to gain or a privilege they have been denied?

Are you familiar with the laws in the UK? You can literally be arrested for telling an offensive joke.

Scots could surely produce a great number of reasons to break free of their freedom-hating central government.

My point being that I have no idea if the people of Scotland hate those laws or not. For all I know they think that the UK is being too soft and wants to go straight up authoritarian. I'm aware of what they could do potentially, but I have no idea what they plan to do in reality.

I'm guessing there is a mixture of opinions in Scotland ranging from uber statist to libertarian. It would be interesting to poll that data as well.

One way or another, it seems that a great deal of them want to control their own destiny, which I think should be embraced no matter what the particulars.

Why do you think they are subsidizing? Scottish govt would be hardcore socialist. Farther to the left than British Labour Party.

If so, then even more reason they should be on their own instead of in a "union" where the property of even more people can be plundered through their socialist schemes. Best they bleed their own.

I was in Scotland for a month back in 2010. I loved it, very very much, down to earth folks pretty much all around, never really feel out of place anywhere you go, able to strike up a conversation with anyone. Political Correctness is almost unheard of.

Then I planned a roadtrip through England and Wales. England was a complete mess, and I'll leave it at that. I went onto Wales and spent a weekend down there, felt much like visiting the southern US to me.

From my experiences, I think England its self is out of touch with its neighbors, not the other way around. Should Scotland ever seek to abolish their gun laws, I would actually be tempted to get citizenship. It would be a great alternative to here should things start getting worse than they already are.

I say, Go for it Scotland!

I always find it amusing when Americans use the word socialism negatively when our economic system has more socialism going on than most the nations they're criticizing.

Then again I have nothing against getting something back out of my tax dollars. Considering what they're taking out of my paycheck, I could have full healthcare, free education, and many many other benefits at less than half the tax rate I'm currently paying, if I was in Australia.

The notion that a vote for independence is a vote for freedom is delusional. Scotland will only be more statist, not less.

Should Scotland ever seek to abolish their gun laws, I would actually be tempted to get citizenship.

    That will never happen.

If you think American socialism is anything like European socialism you're ignorant at best. They don't have a party that is comparable to our republicans. Their conservatives are like our democrats. Their liberals are real socialists (workers own the means of production) not crony capitalists like our liberals. Good luck with your plan of giving the govt money and hoping to get some back. Glad I could amuse you. Your points regarding taxation and re-distribution are amusing to me so we're all happy.

Yes...I for one am glad to know we do not tolerate a regime of progressive taxation and wealth redistribution.

I didn't take a position against independence, in fact I'm for it. I'm just saying don't kid yourself the IMF will be there bailing them out inside of 5 years if they go on their own.

Naw, I know how their politicans are. They do have a fairly libertarian party though, who has an excellent write up on firearms rights. Firearms

You clearly don't know anyone from Scotland nor do you have any idea what the Scottish people are like.

    SOUTH of Zombie city
The South was fighting to keep slavery; Lincoln was fighting to keep the Union and abolish slavery. Lincoln wanted to attack slavery long before he was President.

    Lincoln long spoke against slavery:

A house divided against itself cannot stand. I believe this government cannot endure permanently half-slave and half-free. I do not expect the Union to be dissolved - I do not expect the house to fall - but I do expect it will cease to be divided. It will become all one thing or all the other.

Whenever I hear any one arguing for slavery I feel a strong impulse to see it tried on him personally.

I am naturally anti-slavery. If slavery is not wrong, nothing is wrong. I can not remember when I did not so think, and feel

In giving freedom to the slave, we assure freedom to the free - honorable alike in what we give, and what we preserve. We shall nobly save, or meanly lose, the last best hope of earth. Other means may succeed; this could not fail. The way is plain, peaceful, generous, just - a way which, if followed, the world will forever applaud, and God must forever bless

Without slavery the rebellion could never have existed; without slavery it could not continue.
You make me laugh Kirk. I've read about every book I can find on the subject of Lincoln an the civil war. Lincoln was always about Lincoln.

This seems like a pretty big news story but honestly, today is the first day I fully understood what was going on, and I am on top of the news for the most part. And it was only a couple days ago that I heard Scotland might be trying to achieve independence. Is there a reason why no one is talking about this? I'll bet if you asked 100 people on the street, at least 90 would have no idea what you are talking about. But Im sure they could tell you all about Ray Rice and Peterson.
