when I graduated in 02, we had armed LEO at lunch and most of the day (off duty of course).

There is no new thing under the sun. I graduated in '86 and we had an armed guard in the halls at all times. I'm pretty sure he wasn't private security since it was a public school. It wasn't a big school... maybe 500ish kids... but that guy new your name on site and your schedule. If you deviated from the hall where you were supposed to be, he escorted you to your class or the deans office.

Today I found out it was private security not city SWAT. They where carrying much more equipments than regular LEOS though. They had SWAT vans in the area around the school though. There was way more LEOS around though.

    Here
I graduated in '04 and we had an off duty (armed fyi) on campus at all times. And several on duty at sporting events. And we never had any real threats other than the occasional fight...

My son's high school has at least 4 armed sheriff dept employees there at all times. If something major happens the state police come in. My son doesn't think the local PD is there. It's not a bad school it's just how things are here.

I feel safe walking the trails by the school on mornings after I drop him off if it's above freezing, unarmed and by myself because I often see a sheriff dept employee in the parking lot.
