If you do make sure you get several glow plug controllers and have 6-8 fuel filters on hand.
Be prepared to remove the heads once a year to remove the swollen glow plugs and replace them.
These are the most common failures that we had during my 8 years as a mechanic in the army.
Off the top of my head I would say have:
    2 starters
    4 sets of glow plugs
    3 glow plug controllers
    6 fuel filters
plus the normal hoses, air filters, etc.
should keep you going for a year if your not careful, 2-3years if you are careful about how you start it.

That's why I was also thinking of an ol chevy gasser as well or a gasser blAzer.

I would getthehellouta Dodge first, with my Ford F-450 King Ranch, towing my Toyota 4Runner behind it. When I run out of diesel or cannot find it, then ditch the truck and carry on in the 4Runner.

Right now its our AWD Pacifica with two bicycles as backup. However, when we were downtown at Irish Fest this weekend, we noticed the 4 pax pedal-powered carts. Plenty of room for two and equipment. Might be a useful alternative to gas power...

I considered buying a sea can or freight container and planting it in a hill somewhere. Then all that would be left is to stock it with the essentials. You could even sink it deep and pour a shaft to get down to it. The only question is how deep to you have to go to avoid a nuclear fallout? Given this senario, transportation wouldn't be the issue as long as you could get there relatively fast.

I'll be fixing this one up to be the main bug back vehicle (meaning, get from work to home,) for winter. I'll also be getting spare electric parts for it, and storing those in a Faraday cage. Otherwise it's currently a 05 Neon getting 30MPG average. Then I've got a 93 Bronco that I'm fixing for off-roading. That one will be the get downtown to get my wife if the SHTF vehicle.

    My 95 Grand Cherokee

As soon as I EMP proof it, or go old school in the engine compartment. And I'd also like to put those cool Trax conversion I saw on the Sportsman Channel the other day!

I have a 96 Mitsubishi Montero. Sorry no pics. I keep seeing write ups on a diesel Kawasaki KLX that the army uses. Supposedly 80 mpg and very quiet. If I didnt have a family, it would be my vehicle of choice.

I'm curious as to how you could EMP proof it. Wouldn't the starter, alternator, and other engine parts be difficult to if not impossible to protect? I could see replacing them but I'm not seeing how you could protect them initially.

Emp would fry the computers. Not sure if it would do alternators and starters.

D,mn those bicycle carts are expensive; almost $5500 for the 4 pax types. There are other human-powered wheels options out there, though.
