Ive been going to chiraq for over 10 years now all of them on public transportation via the bad hoods.
In that time frame i have only see one shooting at a gas station, again gang members. That was a shooting in daylight hours.

I fear southern indiana's kkk and the jbts, police, more then chicago. Unless you are in the wrong parts of town at evening night the tuorist areas ok.

I got lost at night there, no idea if I was in a "good" or "bad" part of town.

The vast majority of those deaths is gang related in the hoods NOT downtown. IT IS NOT THE WILD WEST IN DOWNTOWN.
Until the urban Yutes decide to do a mass smash and grab like they've done many times on michigan (the heart of the "safe" city)Also I personaly know 3 people who have been mugged downtown during daylight.I will agree that the downtown area is as safe as a city gets. But don't be complacent no matter where you are. There's also lots of thiefs scanning for credit cards down there. Some of them almost make it obvious to even an untrained person. Jedi your advice upthread is good. Look for other things to use as weapons. If someone chooses to carry that's on them but of you ever had to pull it then you'd do so in the same circumstance as here in Indiana, to save your life. So dead or alive and in some legal trouble. Your choice. Your choice alone. But if you kept it hidden no one would ever know it was there. It's sad places like that have illegal laws and get away with them. Chicago is a cool place. When I go there I take taxis everywhere but you still have to keep your head on a swivel. There are apps for your phone that allow you to request a taxi to your exact location. It will tell you the taxi number and even the drivers name. They will even call you when it gets there so you don't have to be exposed to the outside environment (the street) but for seconds. Use it. The biggest thing is always have an exit plan to somewhere safe at a moments notice. Plan your day and avoid random detours to your plan. Hit them another day. Spontaneous riots or mass waves of criminals looting is possible at any time. Be prepared and know what to do. Most of us reading this will already down on one way to blend into a situation like that. So be good at others (clothing ect) till it passes if you can't get out. Don't pull out a improvised weapon in the middle of a riot. And definitely do not be on your phone while walking!!! Talking or otherwise. It is very very common for people to be attacked specifically to have their phones taken. They look for people doing this!

I'm always amazed to see people having no situation awareness while displaying a $700+ phone on the street.
People have bumped into me as they were walking and texting (I purposely didn't change direction to see if they would look up and avoid walking straight into me).
If very easy to grab one and take off, plus they can't ID you because they were looking down at their screen (usually also headphones on so they can't hear you approch them from behind).
They wouldn't be that careless if they were holding a $700 wad of cash.

I've actually been looking at an AR pistol for a truck gun. How does Chicago and IL law apply to AR pistols?

As a resident of another state, you can drive THROUGH Chicago with a firearm in your vehicle. However, you cannot stop and/or remove the firearm from your vehicle. In terms of protection, smaller knives or defensive weapons are all you got.

So, I am to understand this clearly that I can pretty much conceal my gun inside my car while I am driving and can take said gun and store it when not in my car because it counts as "immediate" surroundings. Says I can have a gun in a "case" inside my car and there's nothing illegal about it. Does not prohibit driving with a rifle in my trunk either, as long as it is stored in a "case".

    Got it.

As context, I want a longer gun in my trunk as opposed to a smaller handgun is only for SHTF. It's a get home gun and I most likely will never pull it out unless I'm stuck in the middle of a riot, car broke down along side the of the road in the middle of no where - kind of situation.

I don't know if this has been addressed in this thread, but if you are flying into Chicago, declaring a firearm at IND is no problem, but I would expect a huge issue at ORD or MDW on the way back. Declare a firearm in Chicago? Lots of questions might be asked, many causing you to miss your flight.

I took my Shield 9mm to Las Vegas in checked baggage last week, flying out of ORD. Not a single problem. American Airlines, FWIW.

I didn't gamble, but walked through several casinos and didn't have any issues. Stayed at the Luxor. As always, concealed means concealed.

The one exception was at the Stratosphere. They have a security checkpoint before going to the top of the tower, and do not allow firearms. No issues in the other casino/hotel areas of the building.

Carry the gun or don't. I would rather be unarmed or poorly armed with a knife or bludgeon than try to rely on a gun that is not immediately on my person.

Just got back. I followed the law pretty much to the letter. No trouble.
You all ain't a gonna believe this, but the folks there are FRIENDLY.
They do tend to speak a little more slowly once they learn you're a hoosier, but they're still very friendly and helpful. It's almost as if they understand that my coming to their city and spending hundreds of simoleons is a GOOD thing, and they want to encourage it.
I'd say if one is going to the Michigan Avenue area that one should probably lock one's piece in the car trunk or the hotel room, (if permitted ), and carry on as one normally would in any urban environment.
    Crazy talk, I know.

P.S. The Field Museum hates Berettas. Don't know why. Has a big sticker right on the front door with a picture of a Beretta, circle around it, line through it. I thought about asking why but I don't much care for them either, purely from an aesthetic standpoint, mind you. So I let it be.

Museums are one of the 23 places spelled out in the law as "gun free." A couple others are hospitals, nursing homes and librays. And two of my all time favorites ate public transportation and rest stops. Jim.

Most of Chicago hates Berettas. I have seen some that hate 1911s instead though.

Ill introduce this question, as an off duty law enforcement officer carrying under the Law enforcement Officer Safety Act, following the magazine restrictions does that allow said LEO to carry in the GFZs in Chicago?

Mag restrictions? Know nuthin bout those. I carried my G19 everywhere I went in Chitown a few months ago. Back in 2005 I carried in the Sears Tower with CPD's blessing.

I'm pretty sure LEOs are exempt from the law in states where the average citizen is limited to 10 or 15 rounds mags.

That shows the hypocrisy of the law makers.
