I'm simply giving my opinion... as is the DOJ.

Many Libertarians would argue the number is well below that.

Maybe the problem is not too few LEOs, but too many Ls.

I see. What is your opinion based on? Been to the 911 call center? Familiar with the run load? How long should someone have to wait when they call the police for assistance? Is it beneficial to a city to have people stay away due to crime? Please elaborate on what information you are using to come to your conclusion, inquiring minds want to know.

I admittedly think Libertarians are "different," but I keep my mind open to their logic (which isnt always universal). In your opinion, what's a good ratio?

    Something nearer zero.

I think I saw another thread someplace else on here along those lines.

Yours is the view of an anarchist. I can't image the turmoil in my city, let alone someplace like 21st/Mitt if police numbers were "something nearer zero." Police may be minutes away when you're in trouble, but most would rather take that than "never."

Ahh, yes. The head in the clouds, I don't believe in violence so no one would hurt me, my life is in shambles because I have to have a drivers license to drive, mentality. Gotta love it.

Tell ya what, let me bring you to Indy and cut you loose. You stay in the neighborhood I put you in for a couple of days and tell me how this thought process works out.

A few months ago I heard something about pulling officers off of desk duty to help fill out the patrol ranks. It sounds like there is a real need for more officers on the street. How is 80 new guys going to be enough?

I have no delusions that I could do this job full-time, but I have often flirted with the idea of applying for the reserves. I always talk myself out of it, on account of my age (38), my semi-athletic physique, and my... (*ahem*) colorful past.

From the sounds of it, they might actually be able to use me.

Do they still even have a reserve program?

    -Paul

Sorry, they lose out on a lot of potentially good mature hires with good life experience because of their age restrictions.

As stated earlier, it's PERF that sets the age restriction. A lot of Sheriff's departments and ISP are not PERF so they take older applicants.

Here is part 2 in a 3 part series that explains it.

Much closer to zero is appropriate.

I wish PERF would change it also. Retired military guys would make great officers in many instances.

Same here. If you can pass the physical, you should be good to go. I think they set the age bar low so its easier to fund pensions the longer people work.
