Not being sarcastic but what is so special about them? Why all the Hype?
Obviously you have never had a meal of fresh caught Walleye and big fresh picked Yellow sponge mushrooms.

It’s the flavor of them, they are terrific. JMO of course.

additional stuff: For a close second, try slicing Portabella mushrooms a little less than a 1/4 inch thick, dredge in flour and fry to a crispy outside in butter in a cast iron skillet. Get the butter hot first. Almost to the smoke point. As close as you can get to the real thing.

eta: last year they were over 50.00 a lb. in local stores.

Well, I only know 2 things about morels:

    1.) they're delicious
2.) how to tell the real ones from the false ones
Agree 100% -Morels in the spring and Chicken of the woods in the fall are the only ones I am sure of - Have a friend that collects 10 different edible mushrooms -Ask him how he can tell good from bad mushrooms, all he says is that they are all edible at least once! that's why I only hunt the two.

I am headed out to my property in Parke Co this weekend as it is the only weekend I have free in the next month. I seriously have my fingers crossed that we will find some but the weather is not looking like it wants to cooperate.

Nice haul, the mix pecker heads, (early)gray, (second) n yellows (last) tells me you’re in the sweet time. I’d go every day for a week or so. If I had that mix. Good Luck. N Again, nice haul.
