I saw they had a Beretta 92FS Operation Enduring Freedom(Navy) 1 of 1000 for sale. I asked to see the weapon and they brought it from the back room. It was in decent condition and they wanted 669.00. I asked if there was any budge in the price and it was a automatic NO. I asked if they had the blue book showing this price and was told that's how they got the price. He also said there was 7 or 8 online going for that price. I guess I shouldn't have done any kind of research before I went so I was gullible and just bought it. I hope the weapon finds a nice home with another Navy Veteran.
I also had trouble with the sales people at Noblesville Cabellas it took countless phone calls and two weeks of my time to purchase that weapon I am in Illinois after being patient for the two weeks I finally vented to the top store manager and ended up getting the gun for 600.00 plus free overnight shipping to a local ffl dealer , I purchased it for my son who was a GM2 small weapons specialist who served from Dec 200 to Dec 2008 Thank You for your Service.

Thats why i spend my hard earned money with Bob at Plainfield Shooting, tire kick all you want and best prices around. He always gives me a fair deal on anything i trade with him. Cabelas not much good for anything unless they have ammo on sale.

There's another thread on this somewhere but I'll post this here too. Cabela's has a "secret room" in their gun departments. That's where the deals are made.

There's the big shelf/case section where Joe High School and/or Johnny Retiree works for $9/hr and even though they "like guns" they're probably not motivated by much more than showing off their favorites and "busting" someone for having a mismatched address on their license. Catch up with those guys on a Tuesday at mid-day and they'll show you every gun there and you can shop as long as you want. They'll roll their eyes after you've looked at the fifth gun you're obviously not going to buy because they've run out of stories of their own shooting prowess and now you're making them work for their $9/hr.

The next section is the "show room." It's usually off to the side and has an exclusive feel to it. It's chock full of old guns with commas on the price tags. The dudes staffing it are a bit more knowledgeable and can't wait to show you the ones with the commas. I don't think they get a commission (because it's a big box store, after all) but I'm willing to bet they've worked there for a bit longer and seem to have impressed the manager with their google-fu and maybe even outright gun knowledge. They're typically not shooters but they probably have a bigger safe than you.

The coup de grace of deal making decisions and the master of disaster at a Cabela's is the guy with the office. If you go in the show room, there's an office off to the side. Sometimes they have big leather chairs and elephant tusks decorating the most manly of manly rooms at the churched up sporting goods store. This guy might have his name on the door.

If you can somehow land in this guy's office sitting in one of those nice leather chairs, chances are good you're ready to wheel and deal. He can make things happen with the wave of his hand. "25% off? No problem. Make it so, high school stock boy. Reflect the price change on the new ticket. I approve."

... and like that, you're gone.

Too funny. It`s their JOB to ensure all the I`s are dotted and all the T`s are crossed, otherwise the goons at atf light them up. Pity you take such a sour attitude about working folks.

Meh, yes they can charge what they want BUT no haggle thinking is bad when, for example, Cabela's sells USED RAS47s at something like $100 over MSRP. 'Informed consumer' or not, you have got to be kidding on that one.

I caught that one because I knew what the MSRP on that particular weapon was

An aside from OP's rant but there is something seriously wrong with Cabela's process. I bought a long gun from the one in Louisville a couple weeks ago and ONLY because I got them to price match Bud's price ( which actually surprised me). Anyways I was there shortly after it opened and was the ONLY person at the gun counter. The price match bit took about 15 minutes to find the price get a manager to sign off etc.etc. I understand that. But from the time I started the 4473 to the time I was able to leave with my gun was AN HOUR AND 45 MINUTES later and that's not counting the 15 minutes for the price match so were looking at 2 hours total. I have bought new vehicles and been out of a dealership in less time than it took me to buy a gun there.

I was in their gun library last week and I asked the guy "Why is this used Taurus PT111 G2 worth $349 when the brand new ones out there are selling for $269?"

He thought I was being an ass.

Got my P320 there. He knew he had me when he knocked $50 on the spot.

Any merchandise is worth exactly what someone wants to pay. It is their job to sell what they have in the store, not help the buyer find a lower price. A couple winters ago I really wanted a JM signature S&W 625. Even cheapest advertised price was fairly expensive. They were on back order every place I checked. Any estimated for ordering were a long range out or unknown. A national chain store had one in stock. They wanted $80 or $90 more than anyplace else. Of course an online price means nothing if they do not actually have one to sell. It was worth the extra price to me, being able to walk out the door with it. I am sure if I was willing to wait a few months, I could have saved that money. I made the decision, and shot it that day. I never have slandered the chain retailer, they did not trick me in any way. They had their capital tied up in stock long enough to have my revolver, and I had full freedom in my decision. I have enjoyed my purchase ever since. Seeing an ad for a cheaper price long after the fact does not even bother me.

Late in the fall I stopped in and saw the roped off B.S. . I just shook my head and said "Nope". Later in the year I was there to meet an INGOer for an unrelated deal. Wondered in afterward, and they were more than eager to show me anything I wanted. I'm still not really interested in buying a firearm from them.

I walk into my local Buckshot store, ask to see an item if I'm interested in it, and if I really like it, I ask them what they can do on the price. They know I've bought more guns in there than the average schmekle, so they give me a price which gives them an acceptable profit, and beats the pants off of the competition. It's shameful how many times they've gotten my money with good service and good prices.

Cabela's is the worst place to sell or buy used guns. From Thanksgiving til the middle of January they have the gun counter roped off and you have to wait in line foe a salesman. I don't know if they allow browsing then or not. when I go there I look for things that are realy good buys. I seldom buy there.

Cabelas may be the worst, but Gander Mountain is the second...

I was in Noblesville once while visiting relatives just checking the gun library but did not buy anything. I ususally visit the one up nort in da region and seen examples of good and bad. I searched 3 years for a nice, older Marlin 1894 in 44 mag that someone didn't want a fortune for. Went in there one day and there was a near mint one, JM stamped and made in 1982. Got it for $620 which was not bad at all. Also got a new Colt O1911, the carbonia blue repro when they first came out. The sticker said $999 which was the going rate. When the cashier scanned the bar code the price was $759 and she said that is the scanned price so that is what it is...(read Great deal). Then again I also seen them asking $400 over MSRP on a Navy arms 1873. Just need to be an educated consumer.

I've found some really good deals from both Cabelas and Gander Mountain on used guns online. It requires patience and persistence. I've had a lot less success finding good deals in store in either one.

Every time I've visited Cabela's used section, I noticed 90% of their firearms could be acquired online for NEW for cheaper.

Last two times I've been in the Noblesville store they have been very under staffed at the regular gun counter. Each time I gave up and left. In the archery department they sold my wife arrows that wouldn't work with the bow they sold her for my Christmas gift last year. This store has been kind of disappointing.

I've picked up a couple of handguns there that were on sale and tax was less than S&H & FFL. That's rarely the case with any rifles I've been looking at of late, though.

Things do move out of the "library," though. There was an oddly shaped purple monstrosity in there that disappeared after a few moons and a 50 cal on the main counter that sat for even longer that found a home 2 days before my son wanted to pay it another visit (never allowed to touch, but he liked to gaze at it and think about the day when he could save up the $5k to buy it).
