I agree with others, Call Ruger and let them check it over. They are great at CS.
Be sure to clearly explain exactly the issue's you are having in a letter that goes in with the gun.
I'm confident Ruger will make it right.

for everybody complaining about the loaded chamber indicator, buy the sr9e (economy)
    Ruger® 9E® Centerfire Pistol Models

comes with 1 mag and no lci and is black stainless should be about 100 bucks less than the sr9 so that leaves money to buy the second(annd 3rd mag) and still costs less than the sr9!

Done...done (annd done) haha got it for the wife over the weekend and she loves it, I just can't load the magazines fast enough for her.

keep in mind I know only what I've been reading... but...
It actually sounds like your guide rod is flexing when you fire. The stock rod is a plastic rod. Check the sides of the springs for signs of wear if thats the case get one of the galloway steel guide rods, 14lbs if you shoot light, 16lbs for stock, 18lbs if +p and +p+ are your primary rounds. (I've heard the 18lb springs still work well with the lighter target loads but have no personal experience with the matter)

Maybe someone on here can back me up, but when this happens the slide does not rack properly which can cause load and eject conflicts. The reason it may seem ammo specific may just be that particular round hitting it at just the right load strength to cause that rod to flex to the side and not straight back as intended essentially lowering the rods spring rate significantly enough to cause the gun to rack the slide under-powered.

Thank you for the good advice.

If that is all true, I'd still contact Ruger first. The steel guide rod might fix it, but it shouldn't be necessary. The Ruger SR series is not generally ammo-sensitive. Restroyer obviously has some background, so although it is reasonable to ask those newbie questions, they don't appear to apply here.

Ruger should be able to fix the problem and has a good customer service reputation. Give them the opportunity.

Edit: I own several Ruger firearms and am happy with all of them. I had a problem with a used Mk3 22/45 and contacted Ruger. There was a part that I thought looked defective and I sent them a picture. They agreed and sent out a replacement part free of charge and that gun has been one of my favorites ever since. :yesway:

Pudly & looney2ns thanks for the help. I'll contact Ruger and see what they can do to help me out (I bought it new a couple years ago).

I picked one up by the way...

    20150806_212824.jpg

Brand new, pretty much direct from Ruger, I was the first non Ruger employee to handle it. I picked up an extra 10rd mag, will get a double pack of the 17s here soon.
I really wanted to go black on black but apparently those are sold out and new ones are going to be hard to find here local for a while, unless I want to pay like $200 more than what I did or find one used. I got a pretty awesome deal, paid less than for new than what I had lined up for used. I figured the stainless is a better material and if I end up still wanting black I can get it black oxide treated by a local shop here for next to nothing, but honestly.... she's purdy

So talk to me about ammo... what to look for, what to avoid, what works well with this gun.
Ive been looking at underwood ammo and will likely be getting a few boxes, but would also like something on the cheaper side for plinking around.

I will also be searching the interwebs and forum.

Generally the Ruger SR series are not ammo sensitive. You can use pretty much any type of standard plinking (FMJ) ammo and it should work fine.

Hollow point/self defense ammo is a much more involved subject and you can search around for all kinds of commentary. It is also more expensive than FMJ. You will want to test any HP ammo to verify that it functions well in your particular firearm. I recommend 50 rounds functioning 100%, though people have different opinions on that. Once you find a HP you like, stock up on it.

Personally, I use Federal HST HP ammo, but there a number of other good brands including Corbon, Speer GoldDot, Remington Golden Saber, Hornady Critical Defense and others.

For plinking/punching paper, I shoot whatever is cheapest at WalMart, etc. Or I shoot my dad's reloads. (All the crap I've put through it, and I've yet to find something that won't go bang and then eject properly.)

For carry, I use Hornaday Critical Defense.

I have not found anything that doesn't work with this gun. I've put everything from high dollar defensive rounds through mine, to a friends reloads, (that I really didn't care for) and everything in between and never had a misfire. I really like Freedom Munitions, good ammo, good price.

Although I like Federal HST and the "Ammo Quest" series is excellent, this video really doesn't prove anything for the Ruger SR series as these tests are specifically for micro pistols (~3" barrel). The reason he made that series is because most ballistics testing doesn't cover micro-pistols at all.

True to an extent....the SR9C is only a 3.4" barrel though...

Ive spent the morning watching the series and then comparing the round I'm interested in to ballistic reports on bigger pistols, Its pretty easy to find vids out there that use the Glock 19.
I am pretty impressed with the Federal HST, and Underwood. Im glad to see the cheaper plinking ammo runs through it well as mine will need to break in and i don't really want to spend $0.70 a round doing so.

speaking of which... Are there break in practices for new guns? Should I clean it or treat it any differently? Are there normal things to look for or consider during the first few hundred rounds?

I actually already ordered a galloway steel guide rod, and have been looking at trijicon night sites along with a crimson trace laser. Being that they are pretty pricey, either will likely come much later.

I rigged up an old Pelican case to serve as my gun box. I can fit the pistol, loader, mag accessories and 5 magazines (3x17rds 2x10rds)
