Broadly speaking, Shooting Illustrated is more focused toward self-defense issues and the action shooting sports like USPSA and 3 Gun. It has more of a "Gun Culture 2.0" focus than American Rifleman.
Plopping his digits up there in that instance serves no function except to instill "muscle memory*" of bad habits.

Yeah, I don't think this is going to be anything like the Great Panic of '12-'13, but the timing is bad for even a small amount of rustled jimmies. Holiday season normally has a bunch of stuff depleted at the wholesaler level anyhow.
